The backward planning as a way of constructing PERT charts is a particular case of the method of "familiar land", when knowing the initial resources, the end goals, and assuming certain intermediate results known in advance, one constructs processes and relationships until a set of closed paths from the start to the goal is formed, the optimal path being chosen out of this set. If only the ultimate goal is known in this method, we obtain the backward planning. Constructing a diagram in this way in inShort should not cause difficulties.
Meanwhile, if you mean the backward planning as a way to build a schedule to a certain milestone, here you can plan the entire project from the current date, obtain the intermediate completion date of the project, and then move the beginning of the project in the actual schedule, so that it ends at the required date. Then time buffers will protect your milestone, and late starts will indicate the beginning of execution of the feeding paths. In the end you'll get a picture similar to the attached diagram.
